General instructions for doing YOUR bath remodel:
Designing, plannning and construction of your bath remodel may be easier, cheaper and could actually be
fun! (think mental health for everyone involved). Resist the urge to break open that wall or to sabotage the sink. Some thought, some research, some planning ahead, some consulting with your peers,
these can be very positive things. We've all heard the remodel/contractor/money/etc horrible stories of the project gone wrong. You can control the timing, the budget, and the entire project. READ ON.

Bath Remodel: Planning for your bath
Just do each step in order. The entries you make can be very simple or can be complex. The planning
entries can start simple then evolve as necessary. The plan will be useful, and is printable
at any step. The more you plan and the more you evaluate your planning, the more successful it is.
We suggest creating your plan as much as possible in one session, then save it and re-evaluate
the next day. Planning WILL eliminate errors, WILL create better results, and WILL help you
manage the project. You may be surprised to discover that the best result of planning is
finding out what you are NOT going to do.
Bath Remodel: Designing your remodel (a related example)
We are ready to re-think the living room/den. We wanted to squeeze a 2' x 4' window into a 28" space to the right of the fireplace, then thought about narrowing the fireplace (it is physically possible).
A friend suggested carrying the facing to the roof. We also wanted to think through the location of the
entertainment center before we repainted (will also do new floors then) and committed ourselves to
another 20 years of the same floor plan.
See the problems? How do you solve the above design problem? You write down the issues.
Draw a graphic, preferably in scale. Ask a respected person's advise. Listen to that person.
Simulate the desired result (options) in some way (probably on paper). This is planning. You can do it.
Bath Remodel: Plan with your contractor
The contractor will feel much more comfortable (therefore cost you less), if the project has
been well thought out. This means knowing the size of the project, the fixture selection,
and where the fixtures go. The size can be as simple as "The bathroom stays the same size". Or,
it could be "The new bathroom gets added on the outside and is 10' wide by 9' long with 7' ceilings
and it will be added at this location". The fixture selection can be as simple as "Toilet and sink:
I already have the new ones".
Bath Remodel: Scheduling the bath remodel
Use the example Gantt Chart provided under the topic of "Remodel planning free software".
Create something on your Gantt Chart that seems reasonable, and print it. Then think about it.
Let someone else look it over. You will find a way to improve on it. Do it. You will have a workable plan. Something of real value to show a prospective contractor.
