How do I Start?

When using Help-U-Plan for the first time, you might want to take the Tutorial to familiarize yourself with the operation of the site.  However,  if you are adventuresome, you are welcome to dive right in and try the   Workspace.  You do not have to log in to do this.  Many people will find it best to start by taking a  Template  (a common chart or timescale) to the Workspace to modify.

The Tutorial describes the Help-U-Plan process for creating a Gantt Chart online.  It introduces the user to the physical layout of the screens,  buttons,  and commands used in creating a new chart, and defines terms that may be unfamiliar to new users.  It then explains the physical layout of the Help-U-Plan Workspace,   where an existing Chart (including a Template) is modified.

Steps to a New Chart

Select a Template  (a common Chart) and modify it,  or
      • Go right to the Workspace,  or
      • Go through our Tutorial

About Templates

A template is a pre-defined Chart.  By using a template similar to the kind of Chart you want to produce,  you can simply change the specifics of a task,  such as the task name or how long the task will take (duration.  This is usually the easiest and fastest way to create your own Chart!

Help-U-Plan provides two kinds of templates for your convenience:
      •
Pre-defined Timescales,  and
      •
Common Charts

If you know the specific timescale you want to use,  such as Sun,  Mon,  Tue,  etc. in a daily schedule,  you may find a
pre-defined Timescale already set-up for you in the Timescale menu.  Selecting a pre-defined Timescale greatly simplifies the definition of a new Chart.

Help-U-Plan has also developed
Common Chartsto reflect the activities and events common to repeated projects,  such as the construction of a house,  a wedding event,  and an annual meeting.  You might find one of these Charts that could easily be modified to your particular needs.  Your Chart may already be largely created for you.  Additionally,  viewing a Chart similar to one you have in mind can be a help in evaluating the Chart;  reminding you of the events and activities that normally happen.  Any of these common Charts can be modified in the Help-U-Plan Workspace.

Creating a New Chart                                                               To Top

None of the common Charts may be similar to what you want to produce.  If so, you will want to define a new one.  It only takes a few moments to define a new Chart,  and the result is a customized graphic specific to your needs.

Defining a new Chart is done within the Workspace,  under the tab graphic of the tabbed folder for creating a new chart.  Enter the name for your Chart,  and labels for your Timescale,  and press the 'Apply' button.  Your Chart is defined,  and you are automatically transferred to the graphic of the tabbed folder for viewing chart data tab.  Within this tab,  you can add and modify data which defines your Chart.  Your current Chart will be seen immediately above this 'Modify' area as you develop it.  A piece of cake.

Printing a Chart

The printed output of the Gantt Chart  (your plan)  is the end result of using Help-U-Plan.  Printing is via your Internet browser.

Once your chart looks as you think it should,  click the  'Print'  button.  This will take you to a page where only your graphic will be seen at the top.  Then send your chart to the printer by selecting Print from the File Menu, and clicking the 'Print' button.

Note:  Remember to verify that your browser settings match those for your Chart.  On the "Print" page,  an information box will display the settings for paper size and print mode.  Ensure that these settings are correct in your browser (check the graphic of the tabbed folder for viewing chart settings tab for print mode and for paper size).

Typically,  browsers are set to print in portrait mode on letter-sized paper.  Help-U-Plan allows you to orient your Chart in either portrait or landscape mode,  and print on either letter or legal paper.  Your Chart will be compressed to fit on the page and in the orientation shown in your print settings.

Saving a Chart                                                               To Top

Once a Chart has been modified to your satisfaction,  you can save it for future modification.  There is a minimal charge for this service  (see Pricing
).

When you save a Chart,  it is saved under the current name.  To save it under a new name,  go to the graphic of the tabbed folder for re-labeling the chart tab.  Within this Tab,  you can enter any Chart name you want,  and then press the 'Apply' button.  You can then save the Chart under this name.  When you again visit the Help-U-Plan site and log in,  your Chart will be available to you from your list of  'Stored Plans'  (your stored plans are also available within the  graphic of the tabbed folder for defining a new chart  tab).
